Laundry Routine For Our Family Of 4

Having a laundry routine as a family of 4 has been so helpful for our family.

Before I became a mom for the first time, I never thought that badly of laundry.

But after having my first daughter, I had different thoughts.

I never knew that babies and kids could have so much laundry, but my daughter definitely proved me wrong.

Between my husband and I’s laundry and then adding my older daughter’s laundry, the laundry started piling up.

And then after I gave birth to my second baby, the laundry now just feels like it is never-ending.

You all know that I’m very organized as a stay-at-home mom, so I knew that I had to create a system that would make doing laundry for my little family easier.

So I made a laundry schedule for my family of 4.

This schedule has made doing laundry much easier and smoother in my family and I want to share what our laundry routine looks like in case anyone is looking for ideas on how to manage laundry for a family of 4.

Do You Have To Do Laundry Every Day?

Before I get into our laundry routine, let’s answer this question.

Do you have to do laundry every day?

There are many bloggers and influencers who would agree that you need to do laundry every day in order to avoid the overwhelm that comes with laundry.

And I would have to agree with them.

I used to try to do all the laundry in one day and would wind up with loads of laundry just sitting in the baskets that would need to be put away.

I figured out that I was good about washing the clothes.

But not so much folding and putting them away.

If you are already familiar with my daily cleaning routine as a stay-at-home mom, then you would know that I wash one load of laundry a day.

I find it to be more effective for me to wash and fold one load of laundry a day.

But not everyone wants to do laundry every day.

For those individuals who would prefer to do laundry once a week, a great post to check out is this one from Jen Bradley Moms.

She dives into the system that she uses in order to get all of the laundry done in one day for her family of 7.

So you don’t have to wash every day in order to have an effective laundry schedule.

But having a laundry schedule in itself just makes doing laundry so much easier.

With that being said, let’s get into my laundry routine for my family of 4.

Laundry Routine For Our Family Of 4

Monday: Dark Colors

Our laundry routine starts on Monday and I start with the dark colors of my husband and I’s laundry.

I wash my husband and I’s clothing together because we put our clothes in the same hamper in the bathroom.

Sometimes, I have to do two loads of dark colors because that is what we are mostly wearing the majority of the time.

After the clothes have been washed, I will fold them in the evening before I go to bed that night.

Tuesday: Light Colors/Whites

On Tuesday, I will wash the lighter colors and whites of my husband and I’s laundry.

I usually only have to wash one load of this laundry because this load is much smaller than our darker clothes.

Once again, after the clothes have been washed, I will fold them in the evening.

Wednesday: Towels

On Wednesdays, I will wash all the towels within our home.

Between my husband, older daughter, and I, we can go through some towels within a week’s span, so I have to make sure we have clean towels to use on a weekly basis.

I will sort the towels into whites and colors and wash them in separate loads so this will be two loads total that I do on this day.

If I had to pick the load that I don’t mind folding, it is definitely the towels.

I can fold towels quickly and put them away in no time.

Thursday: Toddler’s Clothes.

After washing my husband and I’s clothes and the towels, it is time to wash the girl’s clothes.

Starting with my 3-year-old.

I will usually involve my 3-year-old in the process as a way to teach her some good habits of doing laundry early on.

She is usually willing, so I will have her bring the hamper into the laundry room and help load the washer.

She will do the same when it comes time to move the clothes to the dryer.

My daughter can’t quite fold clothes properly yet, but she will try to help me when it comes to folding her clothes.

Friday: Baby’s Clothes

The next day, I will wash my 10-month-old clothes.

At this moment, I currently wash my 3-year-old and 10-month-old separately because I use a different detergent with my baby.

Obviously, my baby is not potty trained like my toddler, so she is likely to mess up some of her clothes from time to time.

When washing my baby’s clothes, I usually include her sheets, blankets, and anything else that she can mess up.

Saturday: Bedsheets

On Saturday, I like to wash the bedsheets.

If you all read my post on how I keep my home clean with a baby and toddler, then you know that I set aside a deep cleaning day which is Saturday.

On Saturday mornings, while we are cleaning around the house, I will put bedsheets into the washing machine

I will alternate doing our sheets and my daughter’s sheets on Saturdays.

And once they are dry, I will place them back on the bed so that we can sleep on them again that night.

Sunday: Free Day

And the last day in our laundry routine as a family of 4, is a free day.

This is typically the day when I don’t do any laundry and take a break from washing and folding clothes.

Sometimes I will wash on this day if we have a lot of clothes that need to be done.

This is usually the case when we have been gone for a little while.

But the majority of the time I don’t do laundry on Sunday.

Laundry is definitely turning into a chore as a family of 6. I don’t like doing laundry everyday. Washing is fine but folding is a struggle. I’m willing to try this method and see how I like it. Thanks!

I’m the same way! I don’t like folding that much either, but I have found that washing and folding only 1 load a day to be a lot more manageable! Let me know if this method works for me!

Wow! That’s a great and very organized laundry schedule. My husband does the washing, while I do the sorting and folding. He just throws everything together so it can get really overwhelming. 😅

    I really love this schedule.

Oh my gosh, yes! Laundry is like never ending around here. I love that you have created a schedule for your family’s laundry because it really does help. I also love that this gives the washing/drying equipment a break! I need to spread out our bedsheets and towels more so I will try to schedule those on a different day!

Your laundry routine for a family of 4 is excellent. I like how you break out the days by the colors and types of clothes on different days of the week. That’s a great strategy, and the never-ending laundry doesn’t seem too burdensome.

  • Pat M

I used to do laundry every day and now I’ve switched it up to one day and get it all done! But I also no longer have babies/young children so it does seem easier!

This is such a great plan! I’m like you and hate folding but spacing it out really makes it more likely to get done. I’m going to try your routine for a few weeks and see how it goes. I have four kids, so a little more laundry but I think this will be great!
