My Daily Cleaning Routine As A Stay at Home Mom

When I became a stay-at-home mom, I just knew that I had to develop a daily cleaning routine that would keep my home clean and somewhat organized.

Because keeping my home clean and tidy with a toddler is a lot harder than what it was before we had a child.

If you have been keeping up with me, then you know that I talk a lot about my daughter who can be a little ball of chaos in a toddler’s body.

All day long she is playing, eating, and getting into whatever her little hands can get a hold of.

The aftermath is usually her room overrun with toys and stuffed animals, dishes and cups piling up in the sink, and clothes that may have a stain or two from playing and eating.

The housework is just never-ending when you have a kid.

But that is part of it and as a stay-at-home mom, I need my home to be neat and clean so I can be a productive and organized mom.

In order to thrive in motherhood, it starts with having a clean space.

In a previous post, I discussed how to start decluttering your home when the clutter gets so overwhelming.

And that post was received so well that I knew that I had to dive into how I keep those areas clean and organized once you have decluttered.

There are several daily cleaning habits that I do every day to keep my home clean with a toddler.

And I wanted to share those habits with you all.

With that being said, here is my daily cleaning routine as a stay-at-home mom.

Are Stay At Home Moms Responsible For All Of The Housework?

Before I get into my daily cleaning routine, let me address this question.

Are stay-at-home moms responsible for all of the housework?

Well, the answer to this question is a rather simple one and the answer is a big fat no.

I understand that a long time ago, the role of most moms who stayed home was to cook and clean while their husbands never had to lift a finger to do housework.

But times have changed and a lot more husbands are helping with the housework.

Having a clean home daily doesn’t always come first for stay-at-home moms nowadays.

The problem with the previous description of what a stay-at-home mom is supposed to be is that while you are busy being worried about whether the house is clean or not, you are neglecting the other description of your role.

And that is being a mom.

If you are cleaning all day long, then you are neglecting the little people that you are looking after.

As their mom, you are their first teacher and you can’t teach if you are constantly worried about what the house looks like.

Now, I’m not saying all this to say that you should never ever clean or tend to your home because at the end of the day, that is your home and you should want your home to be presentable and tidy.

I’m just saying that there should be a balance between having a tidy home ad being a mother to your children.

Is my home super clean and organized every day?

Absolutely not.

But I do little things daily to make it tidier and presentable for my family.

Now that we know that housework isn’t everything when you are home, let’s get into my daily cleaning routine that I do every day to keep a clean home.

Make The Beds

The very first thing I do as a part of my daily cleaning routine as a stay-at-home mom is to make the beds every single day.

In my opinion, if your bed isn’t made, the entire room will look messy.

Everything else can be put up, but if that bed isn’t made, you might as well just cancel the entire room.

Your bed is likely the largest piece of furniture in your bedroom so it probably takes up a good amount of space in the room.

The bed is also the first thing your eye goes to when you walk into your room.

By making the bed, you are getting a head start on a productive day.

This is also a part of my morning routine, so I do this every morning and follow up with opening the blinds.

It’s nothing like having natural light and a made bed to start off your day in the right mindset.

Empty/Load Dishwasher

The next thing I like to do is keep an empty sink and I achieve that by utilizing our dishwasher at night to wash our dishes from the day before.

The dishwasher is your best friend when it comes to maintaining an empty sink.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but the more dishes that pile up in a sink, the less that I want to do them.

The chore that I hate the most is doing the dishes so this is where the dishwasher comes into play.

Throughout the day as you all are eating and drinking, you and your kids can put away those dirty plates and cups in the dishwasher.

After the last meal of the evening, you can start up the dishwasher and let it do its thing overnight.

So in the mornings after I have made my bed, I head to the kitchen to make breakfast for everyone and unload the dishwasher so that we can start putting stuff in there throughout the day.

I don’t run the dishwasher every day, but I find this to be so clutch when I find myself unmotivated to wash the dishes by hand.

Wipe Down Countertops & Tables

After having breakfast and our other meals, the next thing I like to do is wipe down the counters.

I wipe down the counters every single day in the morning and in the evening after dinner.

If I don’t do this every day, then food residue and bacteria can build up on these surfaces that can cause unpleasant odors and even illness.

Since I don’t want that for my family, I like to use an antibacterial cleaner that is non-toxic and safe to use around my daughter.

The multipurpose cleaner that I like to use is this one from the brand Seventh Generation.

It has a lemongrass and citrus scent to it that leaves a nice smell behind while sanitizing the different areas in your kitchen.

Wash/Fold A Load Of Laundry

The best tip that I have received as a mom trying to keep her home clean with a toddler is to wash and fold a load of laundry a day.

I know I can’t be the only one who is in shock at how much laundry children produce.

The laundry feels never-ending in our home and before you know it, you will have piles of it around your home if you don’t stay on top of it.

By washing a load of laundry a day, I don’t feel so overwhelmed by all the laundry in the home.

After I have cleaned up from breakfast, I normally like to start a load of laundry.

About halfway through the day, I will move it over to the dryer.

And at the end of the day, after my daughter has gone to bed, I will turn on a show on Hulu and fold that load that I washed earlier that day.

I have been finding this laundry routine to be super-efficient and it allows me to stay on top of it.

Vacuum/Sweep

I think almost every kid likes to snack on the go.

I know my little one sure does.

She might eat some of her meals at the table, but the rest winds in a little bowl that she will take with her around the house.

This usually leads to crumbs and other food particles on the floor.

This is where vacuuming or sweeping daily comes into play.

The hack that has helped me vacuum daily is getting a lighter cordless vacuum.

I have the Dyson V7 and I can’t recommend it enough.

It is definitely a costly option but you will find that it is well worth it.

You might actually find yourself enjoying the vacuuming process much more when you are using this really light cordless vacuum.

This is also a task I do after my daughter has gone to sleep.

Evening Tidy Up

And the last thing I do as a part of my daily cleaning routine as a stay-at-home mom is to do an evening tidy-up.

I used to try to pick up throughout the whole day and found myself so frustrated.

I would put away my daughter’s toys when she would go down for a nap only for her to take them all out again when she woke up.

Does anybody else feel my pain on this one?

To solve this problem, I would wait until my daughter was asleep for the night and then clean up the living room so that in the mornings, we could walk into a clear space.

So if you have been following along in this post, my morning chores consist of:

  • Make the bed
  • Empty the dishwasher
  • Wipe down counters and table
  • Start a load of laundry

And my evening cleaning routine consists of:

  • Finish loading & start the dishwasher
  • Wipe down counters and table
  • Vacuum the kitchen and living room area
  • Quick pick up and tidy up
  • Fold a load of laundry

This daily cleaning routine allows me to still have a clean home with a toddler.

Your Turn

Well, that is my daily cleaning routine as a stay-at-home mom. Obviously, these tasks I mentioned help with maintaining a clean home, but they do neglect the other spaces that have to be attended to like cleaning the bathrooms. My advice for this is to pick a day to do a deeper clean and for us, that day is Saturday. We dust, vacuum, and mop the other rooms of our home as well as clean the bathrooms on Saturdays. But I want to hear from you all now. How do you all manage to keep your homes clean with toddlers? Let me know in the comments and while you are still here, check out my previous post below. Until next time!
