Learning Shows For 1 Year Old Babies

I feel like if your little one is going to watch TV, then they might as well be watching learning shows that are meant for babies.

As most of you know, I have a 3-year-old and a 1-year-old.

And my 3-year-old gets screen time here and there, so of course, so does my 1-year-old.

I’m not the type of parent who is completely against screen time.

But I do like to monitor what my child is watching so when my girls are awake, the TV is usually on some sort of cartoon that is catered to them that I don’t mind.

With my girls being 2 years apart and in two different phases of childhood, they have different interests in what will keep their attention.

My older daughter enjoys watching shows that have a bit of a storyline with a problem and then the characters figure out the solution.

While my baby girl enjoys watching shows that are stimulating with lots of songs throughout.

The majority of the time, our TV is on something that my older daughter prefers, but the moments when it is just my baby girl, I will turn the TV to something that is more so for her.

In a previous post, I shared some black children’s shows for toddlers and preschoolers my daughter like to watch that many of you really liked.

So I feel like it is only right that I also share some educational shows that my 1-year-old likes.

Here are some good learning shows that are for 1-year-old babies.

Should Your Baby Be Watching TV?

Before I share some good educational shows for 1-year-olds, let’s answer this question.

Should your baby be watching TV?

The researched answer to this question is no.

The majority of blogs and articles you read on babies and screen time will state that no baby under the age of 18 months should have screen time.

The reasoning behind this is that the majority of a baby’s brain development happens within the first 2 years of their lives.

And too much screen time can hinder that.

Which I completely agree with.

But as most of us know, it is very hard to completely avoid screens in this day and time.

Most parents think that screen time only consists of TV screens but screens are not just limited to the TV.

Our phones, computers, and tablets all have screens that many of us on consistently.

In fact, many of us communicate with our loved ones through Facetime on our phones or tablets.

And the majority of the time, these loved ones want to see the kids so should they not get to see them because they should not have any screen time?

Many would say that they should.

I definitely agree that too much screen time is bad, but there are other instances such as Facetime where it can be good.

Plus they are going to come in contact with screens eventually so might as well teach them how to navigate them safely and use them appropriately.

Some of the tips that I found over at Main Line Health mentioned on how to manage media use with toddlers are:

  • Be with kids when they are using electronic devices
  • Research games and apps before introducing them to your child
  • Schedule plenty of non-screen time
  • Turn off screens at mealtime
  • Turn off screens 1 hour before bed
  • Set a good example

Now that we have a better idea of how to navigate screen time with babies, let’s get into some learning shows that my 1-year-old watches.

Learning Shows For 1-Year-Old Babies

Cocomelon

The very first learning show that I’m going to take about is probably by far one of the most popular and controversial of the shows and that is Cocomelon.

This show came on the scene and just literally took over.

If you are not familiar with Cocomelon, it is a children’s show that follows a family who sings a bunch of classic and new children’s songs.

For a young child, this show is extremely stimulating and attention-grabbing.

Even my 3-year-old will still watch this show here and there.

The songs are incredibly catchy and don’t be surprised if your little one starts singing and signing to the songs as their vocabulary develops.

That is exactly what happened my 3-year-old did after watching this show many times.

As much as parents hate on Cocomelon, this is a great learning show for babies that teaches sign language, alphabet, numbers, colors, and even shapes.

Cocomelon can be found on Netflix and Youtube.

Little Baby Bum

A great alternative to Cocomelon for those that are looking for a different option is Little Baby Bum.

This show does the same as Cocomelon as in singing a bunch of children’s songs.

This show is also stimulating and will grab the attention of your little one while teaching them things like the alphabet, counting, and colors.

Little Baby Bum can be found on Youtube and Netflix.

Word Party

While still on the topic of Netflix, another great show to check out that is great for babies is Word Party.

This show follows a group of baby animals as they learn how to interact with one another and learn how to solve their own problems.

The animals are sure to grab your little one’s attention when they speak directly to your kiddo and invite them to interact back with them.

One of the things that I really love about this show is the different foreign language that is spoken by one of the animals.

This gives your child the chance to hear a different language being spoken and possibly learn bits of it as well.

My older daughter loved this show as a baby and now my younger one does too.

Mother Goose Club

Switching back to Youtube, a show that many babies and young toddlers love is Mother Goose Club.

This show follows around some of the classic mother goose characters such as Jack B Nimble, Little Bo Peep, and Baa Baa Sheep as they sing different nursery rhymes.

A lot of the nursery rhymes that they sing are classics that I grew up hearing and listening to.

They also teach your little ones about the alphabet, colors, numbers, and animals.

Between the characters and the rhymes, your little one is sure to love this show.

Sesame Street

Speaking of classics, a classic show that many young children love is Sesame Street.

Sesame Street has been around for so long and it was a show that I also enjoyed as a child.

And I’m so glad that my girls get to also experience this classic show.

If your little ones are anything like mine, then their favorite character is likely Elmo.

My 1-year-old loves Elmo and gets so excited when she hears his theme song or Happy Dance.

Sesame Street is very educational and makes learning fun through songs and skits.

Sesame Street can be found on PBS Kids and Youtube.

Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood

Another great show that can be found on PBS Kids is Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood.

If you have been keeping up the blog, then you have seen me mention this before in a previous post on preparing my older daughter for preschool.

But for those who are unfamiliar with Daniel Tiger, this show follows a tiger named Daniel along with his family and friends as they navigate different situations.

Some of these situations include learning how to regulate emotions, using the potty, and even becoming an older sibling.

In this show, the main character, Daniel, also speaks directly to your kiddo and invites them to interact back with him.

Each episode includes catchy songs that your little one will be humming and singing to well after you turn the show off.

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse

And the last of the learning shows that I want to mention that my 1-year-old likes to watch is Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.

This is another really popular show with younger children.

Most of us know who Mickey Mouse is.

In this show, Mickey and his friends solve different problems they have by utilizing different skills to do so.

These skills include counting, identifying colors, and following patterns.

Much like Daniel Tiger, Mickey and his friends also speak directly to kids through the TV to invite that interaction.

This show is sure to become one of your little one’s favorites.

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse can be found on Disney Plus.
