My 9-Month-Old Baby Bathtime Routine

My 9-month-old baby girl loves her bathtime routine.

From the moment, she got here, she has loved the water.

Unlike my older daughter who had to warm up to bathtime a few months after she got here, this child has pretty much enjoyed being in the water since she was born.

So when it came to coming up with a bathtime routine, it wasn’t too hard.

The main thing we had to figure out was how this was going to work out since we also have a 3-year old that is getting bathed around the same time.

When she was a newborn, we would give our baby girl a bath first, and then our toddler would get a bath after her.

But now that she is older and can sit up really well, we have been bathing them together.

So this bathtime routine will also include my 3-year-old but focus mainly on my 9-month-old and what it looks like for her.

How Often Should You Bathe A 9-Month-Old?

Before I get into my baby girl’s bathtime routine, let’s talk about how often you should be bathing your baby.

How often should I be giving my baby a bath?

This has been a hot topic amongst the parenting community because everyone has different responses.

The experts over at MomLovesBest will say that you should give your little one a bath 3 times a week during the first year of life.

After your little one hits a year old, it is then recommended that you increase the frequency of baths to 4-5 times a week.

Since kids are more likely to get dirtier in the toddler phase, it is recommended to bathe and sanitize your little one more often after they turn 1.

But still, keep it to a minimum and avoid daily baths if possible.

The reasons that are given to avoid daily baths are:

  • That some germs are good germs and can help strenthen their immune system
  • Help cut down time if bathing multiple children
  • Bathing frequently dries out their skin and causes hair issues if washed daily

Personally, we give our baby a bath every day and have been ever since she was 2 months old.

When I gave birth at the hospital, we were instructed to give our baby girl a bath every other day which is what we did.

During the first 2 months, our baby got a bath every other day and once she turned 2 months, we switched to daily baths.

I prefer daily baths because it is a part of our bedtime routine.

When it is bathtime, it often signals that bedtime is near so by doing daily baths, we are getting her used to knowing that bedtime is following shortly after.

When it comes down to how often you bathe your little one, it is completely up to you.

Just because I decide to give my baby daily baths, doesn’t mean that you have to.

That is just my preference.

With that being said, let’s get into my bathtime routine for my 9-month-old baby.

My 9-Month-Old Baby Bathtime Routine

If you are familiar with our daily routine with my baby and toddler, then you know that bathtime usually falls between 6:30 and 7:00 PM.

I will run the water for both of the girls and then put them in.

An easy tip for many new moms when trying to determine if the water is too hot, you can stick your elbow in the water, and if it’s too hot for your elbow then, it’s too hot for your baby.

Another way to determine this is to use the Munchkin White Hot Safety Duck.

All you do is simply place the duck in the water in the tub and it reveals the word HOT on the bottom of it if it’s too hot.

I used this duck with my first daughter and currently use it with this baby as well.

Not only does it let me know if the water is too hot, but it also doubles as a bath toy for my baby.

After the water is ready, I will put both of the girls in the tub and let them play in the bathtub together for 5-10 minutes before I wash them.

When my baby girl was smaller and being bathed by herself, we used a smaller bathtub that I talked about in my post on my newborn essentials.

We loved that tub but now she is on the move, we have had to ditch the tub for something different.

We ended up getting the Summer Infant Bath Seat and I can’t recommend getting this seat enough if you have a newly mobile baby who is sitting.

This bath seat is made for babies between 5 to 10 months.

So this seat is for babies who have outgrown the baby bathtub or sling but aren’t quite big enough for the big bathtub itself.

It provides the support that your little ones need while sitting and prevents them from falling over into the bathtub.

You can check out this bath seat through the link below.

While she is hanging out in her bath seat, her sister and herself will normally play with some toys.

Her favorite bath toys at the moment are these Dripdrop Cups from The Inspector Kit by Lovevery.

My older daughter will stack the cups in front of her and pour water from and into the different cups which she finds very entertaining.

I talked about this play kit more in my post on some floor activities that I do with my baby if you are interested in that particular play kit.

As I was saying above, after 10 minutes or so of playing, I will start washing the girls.

I use the same body wash on both of the girls which is the SheaMoisture Baby Wash and Shampoo made with Raw Shea, Chamomile, and Argan Oil.

I like the smell and the lather that it provides.

Depending on the day, I will also wash my baby girl’s hair in the bathtub as well.

As opposed to my toddler’s curly hair care routine that only happens once a week, I typically wash my baby’s hair twice a week.

This is because she spits up and food sometimes lands in her hair.

For right now, I also use the same SheaMoisture Baby Wash and Shampoo in her hair.

Once she turns one, I will likely be switching her over to the Cantu Kids Shampoo and Conditioner that I use with my older daughter.

After she has been bathed, I get her out of the bathtub and dry her off with a Hooded Bath Towel by Natemia.

I absolutely love these bath towels because not only are they soft, but they are really thick and absorbent.

They keep my baby girl warm once I get her out of the bathtub which means I have a less fussy baby on my hands.

Since I do give my baby girl a bath every night, I make sure to put lotion on her every night to keep her moisturized.

I like the SheaMoisture Baby Lotion made with Raw Shea, Chamomile, and Argan Oil.

Once again I love this scent and this lotion has worked great for keeping my baby’s skin nice and moisturized.

After she has been lotioned and her pajamas put on, that is the end of my bath routine for my 9-month-old baby.

We will proceed with the rest of our bedtime routine and then put our baby down either in our bed or her crib for her to sleep.
